Westhills Baseball

  Westhills Baseball - History

This is the 41st year for Westhills Baseball. If you understand our roots you will have a better understanding of our commitment, sense of community and the love for baseball that has helped our league develop into what it is today.

It was 1970 and Westhills Baseball had a plan, a lease on 81/2 acres, $1,300 in the bank, 3-year-old uniforms, and a dream. A construction committee was formed and given the task to turn 368,260 sq. ft. of uneven, rock-filled, twig-strewn, stump laden, hard-packed dirt into playable fields within 4 months, if the 1970 season was to become a reality. Everyone stepped up to meet the challenge. The auxiliary served food, ran errands, made telephone calls and raised money. The Board members carried out their duties and still made all of the work parties. The managers came every weekend with their players and their parents to make up the hundreds of bodies needed for us to meet the challenge. This was a community in action. This was proof of what people can do, working together for a common goal. This was Westhills Baseball. Opening day was a beautiful sun shining day filled with excitement. Many people had worked all night to be ready. It could have snowed for all they cared. They were ready. THEY DID IT!

Today Westhills Baseball, "Mini Dodger Stadium", as described by the LA Times, is much more than the beautiful baseball complex that it is. We are the envy of the city. We are the baseball program that other programs aspire to be. In impressive numbers, our Westhills alumni populate the baseball rosters of our local high schools, major colleges, and minor and major league professional teams. The most publicized of the Westhills alumni are the major league players, but all of us who participate here at Westhills Baseball are equally proud of the great young men and women who "graduate" from our program with the ideals of community and friendship.
